"You shall command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of crushed olives, to be used for the light, so that you may keep lamps burning always. From evening to morning Aaron and his sons shall maintain them before the LORD in the tent of meeting, outside the veil which hangs in front of the covenant. This shall be a perpetual statute for the Israelites throughout their generations." (Exodus 27: 20-21)
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) states: "In accordance with traditional custom, near the tabernacle a special lamp, fueled by oil or wax, should be kept alight to indicate and honor the presence of Christ." (316) The sanctuary lamp/candle then is a reminder to all who enter the Church that Christ is really and truly present, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the tabernacle. We are invited them to remain reverent in his presence, to spend time with him in quiet prayer, and to just enjoy his company.
Families are invited to have the candle burn in honor of a deceased loved one, or in request for a particular intention. The intention of the sanctuary candle will also be included in the bulletin like those for whom Masses are being offered.
