In 2012, a priest from the Archdiocese of Tororo in Uganda arrived in the United States of America. He had only been to the US one other time. Upon his arrival in New York, Msgr. informed him that a Hurricane was headed towards his new home. Yet, he persisted, not knowing anyone else or having another place to go. He came to New Orleans to begin working at St. Maria Goretti while studying at Notre Dame Seminary. Initially, he was sent for two years to get his Masters from Notre Dame and then return to Tororo. Two years has turned into nine.
During this time, he has celebrated countless Masses, baptized the parish youth, received the vows of couples uniting in matrimony, and buried the dead. He has visited homes to bring the Lord, to enjoy a celebration, to hear a confession, or just to let the people know that God was with them. He has been a true shepherd to God's people.
He also helped Msgr. Gauthreaux. Fr. Cyril could have finished his degree in two years and returned to his home. However, he slowed the pace of his studies when he realized Msgr. needed the help. He didn't shy away from taking an extra Mass, helping to lighten Msgr.'s load or be a brother when Msgr. couldn't get out as much. Until the very end, he was there to support and assist Msgr. He gave all that he could on behalf of his pastor.
Then he became administrator to ensure stability and a smooth transition. For nine years, Fr. Cyril, you have been a gift to this parish. For nine years, you have served diligently; for nine years, you have shown us Christ. Thank you for all that you have done, been, and given to our parish family!
