On Saturday, November 4th, the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ Office of Black Catholic Ministries hosted the Annual Black Saints Celebration at St. Paul the Apostle. During the celebration the office bestowed the Sophie Aramburo Award to people from around the archdiocese in thanksgiving for their work at the parish, diocesan, and national level.
Mrs. Sophie was a retired teacher who became the first Associate Director of the Office of Black Catholics and helped to create programs that would engage the Black Catholic Community while showcasing the gifts of the community to the larger Church.
This year, Mrs. Lucille Grayes, received the award for her work at St. Maria Goretti. Like Mrs. Sophie, Mrs. Lucille retired from a career with the Department of Children and Family Services and now dedicates her days to supporting the work of our parish. She cherishes coordinating the annual Trunk-or-Treat event and is a devoted member of a number of parish ministries.
May God continue to bless her richly for the service she renders to His Church.
